The Sanctuary of Lourdes is delighted to invite all friends of Lourdes to join us in celebrating the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes at the Sanctuary.

Take part in a day of worldwide prayer to the Virgin Mary, in communion with pilgrims from across the globe.

So, what happened on 11th February 1858?

Bernadette, a young girl of 14, went to gather wood near the Grotto of Massabielle. That day, she saw for the first time, a Lady dazzling with light.

“I saw a lady dressed in white: she wore a white dress, a white veil, a blue sash with a yellow rose on each foot.” Bernadette made the Sign of the Cross and recited the Rosary with the Lady. When the prayer was over, the Lady suddenly disappeared.

This was the first of 18 apparitions that took place in Lourdes: a date that changed the life of the young visionary and that of millions of pilgrims around the world forever.

The Virgin Mary, through her presence, made this place a sanctuary of hope, healing and faith.

What's going on in Lourdes on 11th February?
11th February is one of the most joyous dates of the year at the Sanctuary. On this day, Lourdes celebrates the young Bigourdan*, in the  girl's (Saing Bernadette Soubirous) encounter with the Virgin Mary, the graces she bestows and the love she shows us.

The Sanctuary of Lourdes invites you to join us for a World Day of Prayer to Our Lady of Lourdes.
Blessed Virgin Mary, under your tutelage, Bernadette entered into a relationship with the Holy Trinity through the sign of the Cross.
By teaching her prayer and penance for sinners, you showed her the joy of salvation. You revealed to her the beauty of your most pure heart when you told her, “I am the Immaculate Conception”.
With Bernadette, we turn to you full of trust in your maternal intercession. Accept the intentions that we carry in our hearts during this novena of prayer (especially for…)

We pray to you especially for our own conversion and that of all sinners. Watch over all those who suffer in body or soul.
In the hope that Life will triumph over death, we want to sing with you, here and now, the glory of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen!

*Bigourdans are the people who lived in the province of Bigorre, France. They maintained a distinct cultural and ethnic identity from other French people until at least the middle of the 20th century.

My husband Richard and I knew Father Welch when he was serving as a Navy Chaplain at the Brunswick Naval Air Station base chapel, before it was closed. He was very welcoming to everyone. My husband joked with him about his having so many years serving in the military, but yet he was only a full Lieutenant. Father Welch was so funny, he responded with, "Yes, but I am a 'senior' Lieutenant!".  A humerous concept, something only people in the Navy would get.  My husband is a retired Master Chief Petty Officer.
